Is cacao healthy for every body?

If you know me or have read Yoga en la cocina you know that I love cacao and some chocolates too ;). Nevertheless, personally I can´t eat too much of it because when I go over my limits, my body-mind doesn´t deal with it very well. What is the right amount that we should be eating? Should all of us consume it the same way?

Because it is a superfood, cacao lies between normal foods and medicinal ones, this is why its use needs to be treated with respect and moderation:

  1. Make sure that you eat it raw and, if you buy its powder form, it should have been processed at low temperatures. It is also important that you choose comercial brands that are committed with the environment and with the fair trade of goods.
  2. The recommended dosage: 1 teaspoon of its powder form or 3 or 4 seeds per 45 kg. of body weight per day. Probably less than what you are taking, right? If cacao is part of your diet and you are eating it in larger amounts than the recommended one, I encourage you to lower it and to remember that cacao and chocolate are not the same thing.
  3. From the point of view of Ayurveda, cacao is bitter, hot and difficult to digest. If your constitution is sensitive and ruled by Vata, cacao can stress your adrenals and overload the kidneys, it can also over stimulate your nervous system so you should eat it only once in a while and in small amounts. If your constitution is ruled by Pitta´s fire, the excess of cacao can elevate even more your inner fire, creating an excess of heat and acidity as well as the emotional fire. And if the principle that rules your constitution is Kapha, watery and heavy, you should hardly eat it.

Cacao has incredible benefits, enjoy all of them with moderation and joy.
